The Wine Region of Alsace
Wit hits 15 500 hectares of vines, the Alsace region
counts is one of the largest white wine production regions,
90% od the 150 millions bottles of wine are white
wines, 33 million for export. For this region, this activity
is very important and represents 40 % of total
agricultural products sales.
The vines of Alsace are found in the foothills leaning in the
Voges massif at an altitude of between 200 and 400 m. This long band of
soils (loam, limestone, schist and sandstone) 110 kilometres
in length is called the famous « Route des vins d'Alsace ».
The wines with Alsace Appellations
The Alsace Wines are divided nto 3 appellations: AOC
Alsace, AOC Alsace Grand Cru and AOC Crémant
D'Alsace. There are also the special ones « Vendanges tardives » or «
Sélections de grains nobles ».
The grape types of the Alsace Wines
The wines of Alsace are often recognised for their
grape types. The region uses 7 types which are particularly aromatic:
Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Sylvaner
and Muscat.
